Polo Club Roof Garden Renovation

Polo Club Condominium Association : Denver, Colorado

Previous Next

A failing drainage and waterproofing system was the impetus to rethink the nearly two acre space above the parking garage at the Polo Club condominium complex. The new program for the space included a tennis court, jogging/walking trail, bocce court, and putting green. Two large plaza spaces and a shade structure offer the residents opportunities to bar-b-que, hold community events and enjoy the gardens year-round.

The structural capacity of the existing roof deck limited the growing media to a shallow 5” of lightweight soil. The plant palette was carefully selected to withstand the environmental challenges and to provide seasonal interest for avid gardeners. A drip-type irrigation system with an evapotranspiration ‘smart’ controller was used to maximize irrigation efficiency.

In addition to providing the residents with a beautiful new space, the roof garden reduces both stormwater run-off and the heat island effect. The new roof garden successfully demonstrates the combination of an artistic and technical design approach.
